Altex Engineering Old Broach PressAltex Engineering Bystronic Expert 40 Folding MachineAltex Engineering was set up in 1982 in Easton Grey, just outside Malmesbury in Wiltshire, initially to offer machining services to customers across a range of industry sectors, before it moved to bigger, more modern premises in Chippenham in 1991. The growing demand for sheet metal fabrications in the early 1990s prompted John Jackett, proprietor and passionate entrepreneur, to invest heavily – and bravely – in new plant, new software and a highly skilled workforce, with the result that over the following three decades, with an immense amount of determination, dedication and ordinary hard work Altex Engineering has grown into one of the country’s leading sub-contract manufacturers of sheet metal fabrications and CNC machining. We now supply a wide range of industry sectors, such as telecommunications, defence, energy storage, the laundry machinery, heating and ventilation as well as the office furniture industry.

Altex Engineering Building CalneAugust 2000, and Altex could finally move into its own purpose built factory in Calne, situated on the edge of a small, modern business park just outside the town. The factory is strategically well placed between two easily accessible motorway links, junctions 16 and 17 on the M4 motorway which enables us to run an efficient delivery network to all corners of the UK.

Owing to sustained growth that Altex has enjoyed over the years our factory building had to follow suit. Over three well planned and well executed extension phases the building steadily grew in size to its present area of 20,000 ft2 and can now accommodate the company’s extensive services, including its powder coating plant as well as assembly and dispatch, under one roof.

Continuous Re-investment of Income

Altex Engineering Fibre Laser CuttingHere at Altex we are committed to an ongoing programme of investment in staff, plant and cutting-edge technology, with our latest investments made over the past two years in a brand-new Salvagnini P2lean compact Panel Bender, a Trumpf TruArk Welding Robot and a Salvagnini L5 CNC fibre laser. Due to the arrival of significant new contracts from the telecommunications sector Altex had to increase capacity especially in their Fabrications Department and decided to take full advantage of progression in technology. These fabulous new machines do not only produce outstanding quality, but they do that at even greater speed and efficiency, thus enabling Altex to provide their customers with high quality products even faster.

Investment in our Workforce

Altex Engineering Training the Next GenerationAltex are very conscious of the fact that technology is only as good as the operators who use it. We are therefore constantly looking to up skill and invest in our much-valued workforce, from in-house and external training programmes to recruiting new staff to complement the team.

One of the recruits was a talented, enthusiastic university graduate who very quickly became a pivotal member of the team and is now heading it up. He is supported by our latest addition to the team, Maria, a product design engineer and specialist in global markets’ management. We are also extremely proud that for the second consecutive year Altex has been providing work placements for young budding engineers. Altex Engineering Continuous Reinvestment Fibre LaserManufacturing Engineering students usually spend their third year in industry, and while Altex is providing these talented young people with the opportunity to gain work experience, confidence in the practical application of their skills and a potential additional qualification, these year-long placements certainly offer a mutually beneficial experience for both the student and the employer. While students are given the chance to put their academic knowledge into practice they can also potentially make a significant contribution to the company’s operation as they are given the opportunity to work on real life, high standard projects where they can bring all their fresh ideas, passion and creativity to the table.
