Specialists in Precision Engineering and Sheet Metal Fabrications
ABOUT US
From small beginnings...
Altex Engineering was set up in 1982 in Easton Grey, just outside Malmesbury in Wiltshire, initially to offer machining services to customers across a range of industry sectors, before it moved to bigger, more modern premises in Chippenham in 1991. The growing demand for sheet metal fabrications in the early 1990s prompted John Jackett, proprietor and passionate entrepreneur, to invest heavily – and bravely – in new plant, new software and a highly skilled workforce, with the result that over the following three decades, with an immense amount of determination, dedication and ordinary hard work Altex Engineering has grown into one of the country’s leading sub-contract manufacturers of sheet metal fabrications and CNC machining. We now supply a wide range of industry sectors, such as telecommunications, defence, energy storage, the laundry machinery, heating and ventilation as well as the office furniture industry.
To highly regarded Manufacturer of Sheet Metal Fabrications and Precision Machined Parts
In August 2000 Altex could finally move into its own purpose built factory in Calne, situated on the edge of a small, modern business park just outside the town. The factory is strategically well placed between two easily accessible motorway links, junctions 16 and 17 on the M4 motorway which enables us to run an efficient delivery network to all corners of the UK.
Owing to sustained growth that Altex has enjoyed over the years our factory building had to follow suit. Over three well planned and well executed extension phases the building steadily grew in size to its present area of 20,000 ft2 and can now accommodate the company’s extensive services, including its powder coating plant as well as assembly and despatch, under one roof.
Continuous Re-investment of Income
Here at Altex we are committed to an ongoing programme of investment in staff, plant and cutting-edge technology, with our latest investment made in July 2020 in a new fibre laser cutter to meet growing demand. Due to the arrival of significant new contracts from the telecommunications sector Altex had to increase capacity especially in our laser section. Our existing Salvagnini fibre laser cutter, the L1Xe, which had been installed in 2010 and which was one of the first fibre laser cutters to arrive in the UK from any supplier, is still going strong. A decade on, Altex decided to take full advantage of progression in technology and sought out the Salvagnini L5 CNC fibre laser cutter, a fabulous new machine which produces outstanding quality at even greater speed and efficiency.
We are very conscious of the fact that technology is only as good as the operators who use it. We are therefore constantly looking to up skill and invest in our much valued workforce, from in-house and external training programmes to recruiting new staff to complement the team.
Within the past 18 months we have strengthened our Planning and Design Engineering team with the arrival of a talented, enthusiastic University graduate who studied mechanical engineering and has
quickly become a highly regarded member of the Altex team. We are also extremely proud that for the academic year 2020/21 Altex is providing a work placement for our youngest budding engineering star Anna, who is in her third year at Loughborough University where she is studying Manufacturing Engineering. Anna’s year in Industry spent at Altex is providing her with the opportunity to gain work experience, confidence in the practical application of her skills and a potential additional qualification and will lead to the award of a Diploma in Industrial Studies (DIS). This year-long placement certainly offers a mutually beneficial experience for both, the student and the employer. While students are given the chance to put their academic knowledge into practice they can also potentially make a significant contribution to the company’s operation as they are given the opportunity to work on real life, high standard projects where they can bring all their fresh ideas, enthusiasm and creativity to the table.
Customer Care and Quality - at the heart of everything we do
Being a family-run business, owners John and Suzan Jackett have always viewed their customers as a vital and inherent part of that family, where unrivalled customer service and relations is at the heart of everything we are doing. Right from the early beginnings, John has never failed to go the extra mile for his customers and he has made it his mission to instill this attitude into every single member of staff. At Altex, customer service is not a department – it’s an attitude! And this attitude makes our workforce a very special team of hard working, dedicated, caring individuals who take pride in their work and the quality they produce every single day. Our customers’ loyalty is testimony to this. Altex’s motivated and highly skilled team of engineers who are using the latest technology in CAD/CAM and manufacturing systems are supported by our dedicated customer care team who ensure that each customer receives individual attention and is well supported throughout the process. An integral part of our customer service is comprehensive project management for complex or large orders, facilitating the smooth progression of the job from start to finish. Altex is fully accredited to ISO 9001:2015. This ensures quality and control are maintained during manufacture as well as full traceability from first enquiry via design and order right through to assembly and dispatch.
When Customers become Friends
Supported by the Altex Team, John continues to play a very active role in the business, with new clients and product development high on his agenda. While he leaves the day-to-day running of the business in the capable hands of Adrian Brewer, who has been Managing Director since 2008, John’s infamous ‘can do’ attitude and his keen interest in projects that are ‘a bit different and a bit challenging’ have contributed to making him the go-to Expert that customers are seeking out time and time again to help them turn their concepts and ideas into a viable product. John enjoys nothing more than seeing customers leave Altex with big smiles on their faces as he was able to meet their design challenge with an engineering and manufacturing solution.
